Back then Hippocrates was recommending healthy diet, exercise, fresh air, music and massage therapy for restoring health and well being.

In the 1700s massage therapists called 'rubbers' worked for surgeons helping patients recover after surgery.

In the 1800s a Swedish man, Per Henrik Ling, developed a treatment called the Swedish Movement Cure that involved stretching, exercise and massage.
